Vidal Estate winemaker Hugh Crichton has once again achieved exceptional trophy results for Vidal wines, taking out two of the trophies at the Easter Show Wine Awards 2013.
The Vidal Legacy Series Syrah 2009 took out the Champion Syrah Trophy on the night and the Vidal Legacy Series Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2009 was awarded the Champion Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot Trophy. Hugh had been overheard whispering to colleagues that he had hopes of a trophy for the Vidal Legacy Series Chardonnay, which already has a number of gold medals. There was a slight twinge of disappointment evident on his face when the Chardonnay trophy was announced and passed Vidal by. However the elation was obvious when he was called up for the Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot trophy and the grin grew wider again when the announcement was followed with presentation of the Syrah trophy.
Hugh was gracious in thanking his team saying: "We have a passionate team, dedicated to producing premium Hawkes Bay wines and our vineyard sites are some of the best in the region".
Both trophy winning wines have already been bestowed with several top awards. The Syrah was widely acclaimed during the 2012 awards year having already won two trophies, two golds and two scores of five stars across both national and international wine competitions and reviews. Similarly the Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot achieved one trophy, two golds and two five star scores.
There are four wines in the Vidal Legacy Series range which are the epitome of the Hawkes Bay region, made in limited quantities from small and expertly selected grape parcels and offer exceptional quality.
This year marks the 60th diamond jubilee anniversary of the Easter Show Wine Awards, New Zealand's longest running wine competition.
