Vidal had an impressive night at New Zealand's Hawkes Bay A&P Wine Awards taking out Winery of the Year, Reserve Champion Wine of Show, Champion Wine of Show, the Chardonnay Trophy and the Syrah Trophy.
Arguably the country's top producer of these varietals, under the direction of winemaker Hugh Crichton, the winery has clocked up an impressive list of accolades and awards particularly for Chardonnay and Syrah.
Vidal's five trophies:
- Winery of the Year
- Champion Wine of Show - Reserve Series Chardonnay 2012
- Reserve Champion Wine of Show - Legacy Series Syrah 2010
- Chardonnay Trophy - Reserve Series Chardonnay 2012
- Syrah Trophy and Doug Wiser Memorial Award for the top Syrah - Legacy Series Syrah 2010
Vidal Winemaker Hugh Crichton gave an impassioned acceptance speech: "I would like to acknowledge my predecessors who have helped to create a successful legacy for Vidal: Kate Radburnd, Elise Montgomery and Rod McDonald have all played a role in building the prestige of Vidal wines and not least Anthony Vidal and his pioneering uncle Joseph Soler over 100 years ago. I'm also thankful to Sir George Fistonich who has created fantastic resources, with some of the region's greatest vineyards. We are incredibly passionate about Syrah and Chardonnay, two varieties for which Hawkes Bay has the ability to produce outstanding quality wines on the international stage. These awards recognise this, as well as the hard work and attention to detail our people give. Behind great wine lies great vineyards, great climate and people who understand what it takes to grow and make quality wines," he said.
In the last two issues of Cuisine Magazine, Vidal wines have featured strongly in the top billing. Vidal Syrahs placed in the top five whilst a Vidal Chardonnay was crowned top NZ Chardonnay in the May issue. Vidal Chardonnay is a regular feature in the annual Cuisine Magazine Chardonnay tastings, where past vintages including 07, 08, 10 and now the 11 have all made the top 10 list and a five star rating.
Syrahs from Vidal continue to amass critical acclaim the world over. In the past 18 months, their Syrahs have bagged eight trophies, ten gold medals and seven 5-star ratings.
