Villa Maria has had a top performance at the Marlborough Wine Show 2013, receiving four trophies including the coveted Champion Wine of the Show.
The double trophy winning wine was a Riesling: the Villa Maria Cellar Selection Dry Riesling from the top performing 2013 vintage. Other trophies were for the 2013 Single Vineyard Seddon Pinot Gris and a Vineyard Excellence award for Seddon Vineyard.
Senior Marlborough Winemaker Jeremy McKenzie commented on the significance of a Riesling winning the top spot: "It's often to the despair of winemakers that Riesling seems to be the poor cousin of Sauvignon Blanc, it's a great varietal that I'd love to see more people enjoying. Villa Maria's Rieslings are dry in style which makes them extremely good food wines. We're absolutely stoked with the four trophies from the competition," he said.
The Marlborough Wine Show was launched in 2011 as an annual event to celebrate New Zealand's largest wine producing region. Wines entered must be made from 100% Marlborough grapes. This year there were 530 wines from across the region.
