Villa Maria takes out top prize at Easter Show Wine Awards

Along with Champion Wine of the Show, Winemaker of the Year and Champion Chardonnay, the family owned New Zealand icon has also won the Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot Trophy and the Heritage Rose Bowl at the Easter Show Wine Awards 2014.

Now in its 52nd year, Villa Maria can attribute its award-winning beginnings to the Easter Show Wine Awards where it won its first medal in 1962. This year will mark its 35th as New Zealand’s most awarded.

Trophy summary:

  • Champion Wine of the Show - Villa Maria Single Vineyard Taylors Pass Chardonnay 2012

  • Winemaker of the Year – George Geris, Senior Marlborough Winemaker

  • Champion Chardonnay – Villa Maria Single Vineyard Taylors Pass Chardonnay 2012

  • Champion Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot Trophy – Villa Maria Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2012

  • Heritage Category Trophy – Villa Maria Single Vineyard Keltern Chardonnay (05,09,12 vintages)

“It was quite a haul of gold medals this year, with thirteen all up. We picked up a gold medal for each of our four regional Chardonnays, so there are some really great ones to look for from this vintage. Interestingly though 2012 was a tough year in Hawkes Bay for Cabernet Sauvignon. To see this wine perform is testament to the great team we have who can make an exceptional wine even in the most challenging of years,” said Sir George Fistonich, Founder and CEO.
