“An absolutely incredible moment” were the words out of Hugh Crichton’s mouth when the results for Champion Wine of the Show were announced at the 28th Air New Zealand wine awards.
Vidal Estate won the most coveted Air New Zealand Champion Wine of the Show Trophy for its Vidal Legacy Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2013. The wine also won the Champion Chardonnay Trophy. Rounding up a trio of trophies was the Vidal Legacy Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2012, awarded the Champion Exhibition White Wine trophy.
Crichton, Vidal Estate Head Winemaker comments: “It’s been a long crusade of ours to produce great chardonnay and these awards show we’re really hitting the mark. Equally, there is the realisation that the Hawkes Bay is producing world class chardonnay, not all regions can claim this.”
Chair of Judges and Master of Wine, Michael Brajkovich, said the Vidal Legacy Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2013 stood out in a very strong line-up of varietal trophy winners.
“The Champion Wine of the Show is a very good example of the new wave of Chardonnay style we are seeing in New Zealand, but still borrows from the great white Burgundy tradition. It has vibrant peach and nectarine fruit aromas seamlessly integrated with smoky toasted oak,” Mr Brajkovich said.
It has been a landmark year for Vidal Estate, one of New Zealand’s oldest wineries, with the introduction of a classical new logo and label design. The winery has enjoyed stellar success with its Chardonnays across all tiers, winning awards nationally and internationally.
