C.V.N.E Winery showcases work from a British sculptor for the first time ...

Leading Rioja winery, Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana (C.V.N.E), is playing host to the works of a British sculptor for the first time at their Cune Winery in Haro this year. Following the success of the 2015 Cristina Iglesias’ “Wells” exhibition, C.V.N.E is showcasing 23 of Sir Anthony Caro’s sculptures. Said to be the greatest British sculptor of the 20th Century, Caro’s works, entitled ‘New Music in New Casks’, will be displayed both in the winery and its gardens.

Running from 16th March 2016 until 16th October 2016, Caro’s abstract sculptures are characterised by collections of industrial metal objects. Caro brings a sense of tradition, innovation, harmony and quality to his art, which is in keeping with this particular winery which emphasises these characteristics in both its wines and also in its buildings.

Caro was a tutor at the St. Martin School of Art in London, where he played a hugely influential role inspiring at least two generations of artists. He then went on to work as an assistant to the sculptor Henry Moore which inspired Caro’s modernist style. Caro was always very close to music and conscious of the musical interaction of time and space. Upon entering the winery, guests are greeted by three of Caro’s biggest works: Erl  King  in corten steel from 2008, Time Up  in wrought iron, from 2009, both almost three metres tall,  and the painted iron work entitled Straight On, 1972.

Maria Urrutia, Marketing Director at C.V.N.E comments: “We are very excited about exhibiting Sir Anthony Caro’s work in our winery and once again combining art with wine.  Caro was always very articulate about his artistic thought and about sculpture in general. He was a person who reflected on his trade and the sense of sculpture within the artistic human tradition. That is why this exhibition in this particular winery, where tradition, innovation, harmony and quality come together, not only in its wines but also in its buildings, is particularly meaningful.’

C.V.N.E is one of the oldest wine companies in Rioja but it still remains firmly in family control. Founded by brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa, in Haro, Rioja, in 1879, it is still controlled by the direct descendants of the founding family, now in its fifth generation.

C.V.N.E. has three wineries in Rioja: Cune, Viña Real and Contino.
