Bright, intense violet red colour. On the nose, this wine reveals aromas of pink pepper, leather, currant, fresh raspberry, with hints of pepper, thyme, bay leaf and tobacco. The grapes for our Aconcagua Costa Syrah come from the Manzanar vineyard, located barely 7,5 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Planted by Errazuriz in 2005 and 2009, the soil is thin layer of loamy texture and placed on a base of clay and metamorphic rocks, providing the mineral notes present in the wines that are grown in these vineyards. The Syrah is planted in the eastern sector of the vineyard, facing north, which allows the grapes to ripen fully. The drip irrigated, vertically trained vines are planted in thin (40-80 cm deep) loamy soil overlaying slate metamorphic subsoil, which lends great elegance, minerality, and complexity to the wines grown here.
The season began with an ideal spring, the heat summation was moderately higher than the historic average, and there was no rainfall. The relatively early 2015 harvest resulted in a vintage with a fresh palate profile, fine tannins, elegant potency and concentration, subtle aromatic expression, and deep colour.
The grapes were hand picked and transported to the cellar in boxes of 12 kilos approximately to avoid damaging the fruit. They were then carefully inspected in a sorting table, crushed and deposited in stainless steel tanks, where the grapes underwent the fermentation with its native yeasts only. The total maceration time was 12 to 25 days. For 12 months, 12% of the wine was aged in French oak barrles, 78% was aged in second- and third-use French oak barrels, and the remaining 10% was aged in Stockinger foudres of 2,500 litres capacity.
