Sancerre Wines

This famous Loire Appellation covers just over 2,800ha and produces red, white and rosé wines. Situated on the left bank of the Loire on the eastern edge, its vineyards cover a series of hillsides dominated by the ‘Piton’ or peak of Sancerre. It is famed for its three soil types, all bringing different characters to their wines. ‘Terres Blanches’ (white earth) compact chalk over Kimmeridgean marl; ‘Les Caillottes’ gravel and limestone; and ‘Silex’ (flint). Like Pouilly-Fumé, Joseph Mellot offers négociant, domaine, single vineyard and prestige cuvée wines.
